A 40-year-old mystery may bring two lonely people together or tear them apart, forever.
When the Earl of Wraysbury rescues a young woman from a carriage accident, he can't resist her laughing eyes and wry sense of humor, even though their families have been locked in a feud for generations. Anemone may be achingly lonely but she's loyal to her family. When she wakes up after an accident in the strong arms of a handsome stranger, she's immediately drawn to him, and appalled when she discovers he's her family's sworn enemy, the Earl of Wraysbury. Neither Anemone nor the earl is prepared for the flaring attraction they feel, or for the escalation of the war between their families when a 40-year-old mystery triggers accusations of murder. Loyalty and the threat of a dangerous duel are destined to tear the lonely lovers apart unless they are willing to defy their families and take a chance on love.

I have been re-reading "The Archer Family Regency Romances" in order and I think I must have missed this one the first time I read them. It is as good as the rest of the books in the series and I have enjoyed it very much. The thing I like best about these books is that they don't need explicit sex scenes to tell a good love story. That is so refreshing after reading some many RR's that the authors think they have to include porn to keep up with the current trends. Amy Corwin does a great job of writing a story good enough to entertain on the plot alone.Anemone Comstock has come to visit her Aunt Marigold and Uncle Albert in the country to get away from her third failed season in London. All her friends have found their true love, married and are starting families. She is feeling left out because all her friends talk about are their husbands, new babies, or being pregnant. She is heartbroken that she will be the only one of them who is a spinster and will Aunt Anemone to all her friends children as they grow up.
Harnet Archer, the Earl of Wraysbury has been asked by his cousin, the Duke, to visit a branch of the family that has been estranged from the rest of the Archer family for many years and try to mend some fences. The estrangement has lasted so long no one really remembers how it happened in the first place. Frederick Archer is not an easy man to get along with; Wraysbury isn't sure just what it is about the man that irritates him so, but he is honor bound to try to do as the Duke requested and improve relationships within the family.
The Albert Comstock family and the Frederick Archer family have been feuding for 40 years. Ever since Frederick Archer's father won the title to the Comstock estate in a card game while Frederick was away at college. As a result the Comstock family was forced out of their home and their only option was to live in the small dowager house on the property that now belonged to the Archer family. Mysteriously, Albert's and Frederick's fathers both disappeared after the night of the card game and were never heard from again. Frederick and Albert can't stand each other and fight constantly.
At Sunday services Anemone is nearly run over by a carriage and Wraysbury saves her life. She faints and wakes up in his arms. She is a spinster and he is a handsome Earl so nothing came ever come of any relationship between them but she finds herself falling in love with him. He seems to pay more attention to her than she merits and her aunt keeps reminding her that he is only toying with her while he is on vacation and soon he will be gone never to see her again. And, he is one of those awful Archers so he can never be trusted!
As they are getting to know each other better there are many things happening. Besides the feud, there is theft, danger, duels, and lots of surprises on the way. Can they survive the hatred between the families? Is the Earl already engaged to someone else? Can Anemone prevent her Uncle's death? Will Aunt Marigold become a widow and crumple under all the strain? How can Anemone face returning home only to live out her life as a spinster?

A Stolen Rose (Audible Audio Edition) Amy Corwin Ruth Urquhart Audible Studios Books Reviews
First I have to say that I am a fan of Amy Corwin, and I read everything I can get. This was a little different, but it still was about the Archers and this family is always entertaining. The story is strong, the editing good and the writing typically Amy excellent. Really enjoyed it, and I do recommend it highly.
I was so engrossed in the storyline that I read this book in one sitting. I felt a real connection with the heroine, although I have to admit that at first I did not understand what attracted the H to the h. As the story went along, I began to understand. I loved the H's character. This might be my favorite in this series.
Fairly enjoyable and easy to read. There were a few things I didn't care for, such as the silly name of the heroine, the misunderstanding about the sister, the whole to-do about class differences that comes to nothing in the end, etc. There is one really glaring plot hole IMO, which I can't mention without spoiling the story, but overall I did enjoy the book and recommend it.
The feud started forty years before the start of the book. Comstock lost his estate in a gamble with an Archer. Although both men disappeared that night, an avowal was found to this effect , and Archer's son displaced Comstock's wife and small son to the dower house and took over the estate. In this book Archer's cousin, an Earl, and Comstock's niece, meet and fall in love but the feud separates them. Can they find out what really happened that night and heal the rift so their love can flourish?
Well-drawn supporting characters, a charming aristocratic hero, a heroine on the despairing verge of spinsterhood, and a 40 year old feud anchored by an equally old mystery make for an engaging read.
The behavior of the guilty culprit doesn't ring quite right in the final revelatory scene, but it's possibly a personal nit, as I was expecting the character to seem darker, under the circumstances.
It was highly entertaining to see characters from earlier Second Sons novels step on stage to add extra interest. All of Corwin's Second Sons novels are well worth reading, by the way, very affordable in ebook format, and escapist historicals at their best.
The truth now Ms Corwin, why did you give the leading lady such a horrible name. Anemone has to be one of the most awkward words in the English language and does not belong on a human being. There are hundreds of lovely flower names that you could have chosen from and to make matters worse the anemone was not introduced to England until 1844 so it is highly unlikely that a woman would have been baptized with such a moniker at the time of the story. I find it truly annoying when an author uses a name that your brain (at least mine) does not want to pronounce correctly and sounds dreadful when you do.
As for the story itself, it was very well done and I am quite fond of the Second Son's Inquiry Agency mysteries. No spoilers here.
I would recommend that the reader simply assign the leading lady a different name and use it in place of the atrocity that she has, that the s how annoying I found it.
Change her name and this book will get 5 stars.
This was my introduction to Amy Corwin and her Archer family series, and I rather enjoyed it.
There were a few instances in which I thought dialogue was a little too modern, if enjoyable.
And I join other reviewers in asking WHY you would name a character Anemone. There are other flower names if you're determined on that path.
I did appreciate how she dealt with the mystery plot - I thought I had it figured out and she threw in another twist that I didn't see, but was believable once you looked back. It was a nice touch on how it impacted one of the characters, who is quite detestable.
I got a chuckle at the stable boy named James Herriot... I see what you did there, author.
The hero and heroine had a nice relationship, and I liked most of the characters.
I plan to read more by this author.
